As any good golfer will realize that to be consistent in your game you have to be consistent in your swing. And to be consistent in your swing you have to have a good golf swing tempo. Whatever the speed of your swing it must have rhythm and balance.

The speed of the tempo is irrelevant, it can be slow or fast, but what matters is the consistency and the smoothness of it. Some take a metronome with them when they practice, whilst others go with whatever the latest gadget on the market is that has been designed to help. Now here is a sweeping statement, the problem with all golfers is that they swing the club too fast. They do this because they are using a bit of basic logic, the faster the club head is traveling when it hits the ball the further the ball will go. This is true and the reasoning is sound, but do you need to waste all that speed and power for the whole swing, well the answer is no.

So to take everything to extreme you could be completing all of your back-swing in slow motion, carrying on like that until just before impact on the down-swing, and then switching on full power to hit the ball. So, with that in mind you have the vast majority of the swing to concentrate on your tempo. Obviously there has to be some acceleration to get you from your back swing to impact speed, but the trick is to accelerate smoothly. The harder you try to swing, the more unbalanced you will become and the you will not only lose accuracy with the club on ball, but you will also lose some power.

A top golfer swings with seemingly little effort, meaning that they have good tempo. They swing smoothly and stay in control, right to the moment of impact, so as to get the highest speed possible. There will be no over-swing as that would be a sign of trying to swing too hard, and it would no longer be effortless.

The best way to get the tempo of your swing sorted out is to go down to your local range and hit a few balls. Do not worry where they end up, just concentrate on getting a smooth and balanced golf swing. Then you can think about the mechanics of getting the golf ball to go where you want it to go.
